Introduction

The graduate division of the Department of Film and Theater combines professional training with studies in theory and
history leading to the M.A. degree. The Department offers a four-semester M.A curriculum in intensive professional
research, focusing on studies of theory and historical criticism and additionally preproduction of film & theater for select
students.
The Department's scholarly and teaching interests focus on the cultural, social, economic, political and discursive settings
in which theater & film industries, texts and audiences exist and operate. We examine national and international materials
and texts, and the nature and form of film and theater’s representations.
The program of comparative research on Asian films is a pioneering graduate course for the study and design of new
historical film research. The two-year program of study, leading to the Master of Arts degree, emphasizes hands-on training
that offers students the opportunity to acquire the ability necessary for the interactive researcher’s capacity.
The Department’s faculty addresses these issues from a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches associated
with the arts and humanities. The Department's Master of Arts programs are designed to help students become researchers,
filmmakers, and performers capable of producing provocative work. The Film and Theater Department currently has 10
faculty members who provide an environment in which graduate students receive optimal opportunity for study, research,
teaching and the production of creative work.
